Alfredo Espinoza Mateus was appointed Archbishop of Quito by Pope Francis in 2019. Six years earlier, he was appointed Bishop of Loja, same as later, by the Holy Father. At the age of twenty he joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, and went on to study philosophy, theology and pedagogy. Prior to that he had studied medicine for two years at the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil. He worked in a number of different positions within the Salesian educational system. The next International Eucharistic Congress is going to be hosted by his city, Quito.
